Once upon a time, there was a little girl named Kolfinna who lived on a beautiful farm in the countryside with her family. The farm sat at the foot of tall mountains, and there was a dense forest nearby that hid many mysterious creatures.
Winter had arrived, and Kolfinna loved winter. The snow lay thick over the ground, and everything became so peaceful, as if the world itself were in a deep sleep. Kolfinna’s favorite time during winter was when the moon shone brightly in the sky, and the moonlight made the snow sparkle as if a million stars were on the ground.
What is a Skoffín?
Kolfinna’s grandmother also lived on the farm, and she often told her stories. Some of the stories made Kolfinna a little frightened. One of these was about strange creatures that lived in the forest. One of them was the Skoffín. The Skoffín was a mysterious being, a mix between a cat and a fox, with a body like a cat but with a long, furry tail like a fox. It also had large green eyes that glowed.
“The Skoffín is a mysterious creature,” her grandmother said with a serious expression. “People are afraid of the Skoffín, so it has never had any friends.”
Kolfinna found it amusing that people were afraid of this creature. She didn’t believe that something resembling a cat could be so terrifying.
The Skoffín in the Forest
Later that evening, when everyone had gone to bed, Kolfinna decided to go out in the snow and fetch water from the well. She dragged her bucket through the snow when she suddenly heard a soft meow carried by the wind.
She stopped and looked around. There, under a nearby tree, sat a strange animal. It wasn’t just a fox, and it wasn’t just a cat—it was something in between, with a long tail and large, gleaming eyes that reflected the moonlight.
Kolfinna immediately realized that this was the Skoffín her grandmother had talked about. But instead of being scared, she smiled gently. “Hello, little friend,” she said warmly.
The Skoffín stared at her, its eyes wide with surprise. No one had ever spoken to it like that before. It walked slowly toward her, its tail softly sweeping back and forth in the snow. “I’ve always been alone,” it said quietly. “Everyone avoids me because they think I’m dangerous.”
Kolfinna smiled even more. “I’m not afraid,” she said bravely. “Do you want to play with me?”
The Skoffín looked at her, thoughtful, then slowly nodded. Without hesitating any longer, they began to play in the snow. They threw snowballs, laughed together, and bounced around like the best of friends. Kolfinna realized that the Skoffín wasn’t dangerous at all—it was just lonely and had never made a friend before.
The Skoffíns Friend
From that day on, Kolfinna and the Skoffín became the best of friends. She didn’t tell anyone about their friendship, knowing that no one would understand. But when the next winter came, she always looked toward the forest, sure that the Skoffín was waiting there for her, ready to play with her again.
And that is how the story ends about the Skoffín—the creature that only wanted a friend.
