The Viking Age saga

The Vikings first lived only in the Nordic countries, but then they began to sail further and further afield and settle in wider areas, such as the British Isles, Eastern Europe, and the Mediterranean.

The beginning of the Viking Age is considered to be the first documented Viking raid, the raid on the Lindisfarne monastery in England in 793.

Eric the Red was the first to settle in Greenland and was the father of Leif the Lucky. Eric was born in Norway and called "red" because of his hair color. But moved to Iceland because of a dispute with others in Norway. You can read about his life in the Saga of Eric the Red.

Væringjar voru norrænir víkingar sem voru á mála hjá keisaranum í Miklagarði nú Istanbúl í kringum árið 1000. Orðið var einnig haft í byrjun 20. aldar um unga Íslendinga sem fóru utan nú og áður að leita sér fjár og frama meðal stórþjóða heimsins. Værinjar störfuðu sem varðmenn og lífverðir keisarans vegna þess hversu góðir og óttalausir bardagamenn þeir voru.

Vinland or Wine country is the name of a region in North America that Leif the Lucky Eiriksson discovered around the year 1000. In 1960, ruins of a Norse settlement were discovered at L'Anse aux Meadows in northern Newfoundland, Canada. The name Vinland is probably because there were grapes growing there or some berries that could be used to make wine frome.

The Garden State is an old Norse name for the part of Russia and Ukraine that was partially occupied and ruled by Norsemen, especially the Swedes, during the Viking Age. They mainly conquered areas near the largest rivers and streams, as far south as Kiev, and used the rivers as shipping routes south to the Black Sea and even the Caspian Sea.

Víkingarnir voru færustu siglingamenn Evrópu á Miðöldum. Þeir voru frábærir að smíða skip og kunnu að rata um höfin. Það gerðu þeir með því að fylgjast með stjörnunum á himninum, til dæmis pólstjörnunni sem er alltaf í hánorðri.

Þeir fylgdust líka með dýrunum. Þar sem fluglar voru benti það til þess að land væri í nánd og þeir vissu hvaða hvalategundir héldu sig nærri landi. Þeir virtu líka fyrir sér skýin því þeir vissu hvers konar skýjabólstrar myndast við fjallstinda. En það sem mestu máli skipti er að víkingarnir hönnuðu skip sem þoldu langa siglingu.
